Because this is a writing course and you may end up collaborating with other students, thoughtful communication is absolutely necessary. Professionalism and respect must be observed at all times. My students come from a variety of backgrounds, cultures, experiences, etc. and I strive to create an educational environment where all students feel welcome and safe.
The following will be considered a violation of thoughtful communication:
- Profanity directed toward myself or another student;
- The use of racial slurs/derogatory terms/hate speech, whether or not directed toward a specific individual;
- Demonstrations of sexist, racist, homophobic, or harmful extremist ideology.
Violating our thoughtful communication policy will be taken seriously. For a first offence, students will receive a point deduction on the affected assignment. If the issue becomes a recurring problem, the student may fail the course for the semester.
Also, If you have a name other than the one listed in your school records that you would prefer to be addressed by, please let me know and I will do my best to honor it :)
• Face-to-Face - No food, drink, tobacco, cell phones, etc.
• Online - Since face-to-face meetings in the classroom may be replaced by online meetings through discussion boards, emails, and/or Blackboard Collaborate, students are expected to follow the rules of netiquette in these forums.
• Hybrid - When face-to-face meetings in the classroom are replaced by online meetings through discussion boards, emails, and/or Blackboard Collaborate, students are expected to follow the rules of netiquette in these forums.
• Hyflex - Whether attending in person or online (synchronously or asynchronously)—students are expected to engage respectfully and responsibly. Arrive prepared, minimize distractions, and participate actively using appropriate tools (e.g., microphones, chat, discussion boards). When joining remotely, keep your camera on when possible, mute your microphone when not speaking, and use the chat feature constructively. In the classroom, be mindful of peers who are joining online by speaking clearly and allowing space for all voices. All communication should remain professional.
